Plaintiff Experienced Complications after Xarelto Prescription

Virginia Stuntebeck stated in her complaint that she was prescribed with Xarelto medication by her attending physician for her atrial fibrillation in July 2012. Severe complications were then experienced by the claimant which required hospitalization for a number of days due to the severe internal and gastrointestinal bleeding, all these in just a matter of a few months. Making the problem worse was the absence of an antidote or reversing agent that would help in controlling the severe bleeding, forcing doctors to use emergency measures in order to prevent serious harm or death to the patient.

Xarelto Lawsuit Filed by Patient

It was alleged by Virginia G. Stuntebeck in her lawsuit that Xarelto sold by the its manufacturers was a dangerous and defective drug and that patients and health providers were not warned of the risk of bleeding that is irreversible. Named defendants in this lawsuit were Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a business unit of the giant healthcare company Johnson & Johnson.

Xarelto Lawsuits Filed by Other Patients

Since the filing of the Xarelto lawsuit by Virginia Stuntebeck, other patients who have sustained injuries as a result of using this anticoagulant drug have also filed claims against the manufacturers. In Florida, a widow has filed a Xarelto lawsuit against the manufacturers after the death of her husband due to the very fatal subdural hemorrhaging associated with Xarelto medication.

On behalf of the heirs of a patient who died due to uncontrollable bleeding after only taking Xarelto for less than 10 days, another person has also filed a Xarelto lawsuit in Vermont. Other patients injured by this medication have also filed Xarelto lawsuits in other States, on top of the two filed in Florida and Vermont.

Xarelto Adverse Reports

It has been revealed, based on the adverse events reports gathered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), that there have already been over 2,100 patients who experienced severe complications associated with the Xarelto drug. Due to serious bleeding, roughly 900 patients out of this number have been hospitalized with about 183 patients succumbing to death.

Is Xarelto the Next Pradaxa?

In just a matter of two years, Xarelto has already dominated the market for blood thinners and have in fact surpassed Pradaxa, its closest competitor. While surpassing Pradaxa in sales, it has also been said that it has overtaken Pradaxa in terms of numbers of severe complication experienced by patients.
Legal experts say that at the rate adverse events are reported, it will not be a surprise if Pradaxa lawsuits are exceeded by Xarelto lawsuits. Lawsuits involving Pradaxa are said to be in the thousands, with over 4,000 of those to be settled by the manufacturer for an amount of $650 million, reports say. The question right now is whether Xarelto will go the way of Pradaxa lawsuits in view of the very similar circumstances.
